Jesus said, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
Reflection: A yoke is a wooden beam that helps a beast of burden bear its load more comfortably by distributing the weight. Our burdens are as diverse as they are numerous in each of our lives. Jesus summons us to come and learn from being yoked together with him, which gives us an experience of his gentleness and humbleness of heart.
Being invited to walk in step with Christ transforms our burdens into opportunities for grace and blessing.
Seeking union with Jesus does not free us from our burdens. Rather, when we allow ourselves to be yoked together with him, we allow God to work in and through our pain and suffering. No matter how heavy our burden, no matter how weary we become, Jesus calls us to come to him. It is only when we give ourselves over completely to God’s will, as he did, we will find that his yoke is easy and his burden light
